The Armed Forces Institute of Pathology was a U.S. military institution for diagnostic consultation, education and research in pathology, based on the grounds of Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Its pathologists gave second-opinion diagnoses on specimens sent by military, veterans' and civilian doctors, and it built a repository of more than three million cases of rare and difficult lesions. Its staff were central to the World Health Organization's tumor classifications and to the TNM cancer staging system, and its radiologic pathology course trained most U.S. radiology residents. It closed on September 15, 2011.

The institute traced its origins to the Army Medical Museum, founded in 1862 during the Civil War by Surgeon General William A. Hammond, who directed field medical officers to collect "specimens of morbid anatomy" for study. In 1946 the museum became a division of the new Army Institute of Pathology, which was renamed the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in 1949. Its Building 54, designed in 1951 to withstand an atomic bomb, had no windows and walls reportedly eight feet thick, and from 1971 to 2011 it also housed the museum, renamed the National Museum of Health and Medicine in 1989. The 2005 Base Realignment and Closure round recommended disestablishing the institute and moving its military functions to Bethesda, Dover Air Force Base and Fort Sam Houston. Congress created the Joint Pathology Center in 2008 to take over many of its duties, the museum moved to Silver Spring, Maryland, and the building later went to Children's National Hospital.

The institute entered UFO debate in August 2026, when physicist Eric Davis, a former consultant to Pentagon-funded UAP studies, described where he said recovered non-human bodies had gone. On NewsNation's Katie Pavlich Tonight he said, "We did have a hint of where those bodies went to when they were recovered," adding that the institute involved "got split up into two or three components" that were moved into other military medical institutes under the first Obama administration. A clip shared on August 19 presented him as naming the Army Medical Museum, later the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, and a That UFO Podcast interview released on August 23 listed the institute among the subjects he discussed.

Davis said he had seen the evidence and the records but produced neither, saying he remained bound by a nondisclosure agreement. John Greenewald Jr. of The Black Vault replied that if Davis was speaking openly about the records, they were not classified, and asked him to say where the report could be found. Online researchers also tied the account to Fort Detrick in Maryland, although the institute itself was based at Walter Reed in Washington.

For nearly 150 years the institute and its predecessor were the military's central repository of pathology specimens, from Civil War remains to millions of modern cases, and it was closed during President Barack Obama's first term, six years after the decision to disband it. Those facts give Davis's account its institutional setting; the bodies he describes appear in no released record of the institute or its successors.
