Probed Analysis

KLAS-TV is the CBS-affiliated television station on channel 8 in Las Vegas, Nevada, with studios in unincorporated Winchester. Its newscasts have used the 8 News Now name since late 2009. The station went on the air on July 22, 1953, as Nevada's first television station, owned by Las Vegas Television Inc. under Las Vegas Sun publisher Hank Greenspun. Howard Hughes's Hughes Tool Company bought it in 1968; after Hughes's death it was held in trust until Landmark Communications bought it in 1978, and Nexstar completed a $145 million purchase in February 2015. It has carried CBS programming since it signed on, and its newsroom has won more than 100 awards, including for investigative documentaries about the American Mafia and UFOs.

The station's UFO record runs through George Knapp, who joined KLAS as a reporter and anchor in 1981 and has worked as an anchor, a member of its I-Team investigative unit and host of "Street Talk." In May 1989 KLAS aired Knapp's interview with a man called "Dennis," his face hidden, who said he had worked on recovered flying saucers at a site called S-4 near Area 51. In November 1989 the same man appeared unmasked as Bob Lazar. His account remains disputed: the schools he named said they had never heard of him, and the contractor EG&G reported having no records on him. Knapp's nine-part 1989 series on Area 51 drew international attention, and a 2020 Desert Companion profile credited his reporting with making the government's refusal to acknowledge the base untenable.

Knapp left the station in 1991 and returned in 1995, and his stories for the station on cattle mutilations, crop circles and Area 51 kept anomalous subjects a regular part of its newsroom's output. By 2020 he was leading Mystery Wire, a station-backed archive of his past reports and full interviews that was expected to draw on Nexstar's other stations; it later grew into a regular program. Knapp has described the subject as a news story rather than a belief.

The station remained an active UAP outlet in 2026. In April it aired an exclusive interview with James Lacatski, who designed and directed the Defense Intelligence Agency's AAWSAP program, about a new book on its work, and Knapp also interviewed Lazar about the film S4: The Bob Lazar Story. In August KLAS reported that aerospace businessman Robert Bigelow said he had encouraged President Trump toward UFO disclosure. As with the Lazar broadcasts, such segments present the interviewees' own accounts.

KLAS is a rare commercial local station whose newsroom has treated UFOs as a continuing investigative beat for more than three decades. The 1989 Lazar broadcasts it aired remain among the most cited and most disputed reports in UFO history, and its archive is a primary record of how Area 51 entered public consciousness.

I’m fairly certain that the decision to ignore Avi and Jay’s decisions to ignore other media outlets are separate issues. The one with Avi comes from an unsavor [Quoted] so on points 1 and 2. he wasnt too busy for fox, people, KLAS or a phenomecon conference panel. i called him multiple times on his personal cell, emailed and texted, backchanneled, and spoke to people in person. I know others that did too. I know for a fact its his real number. ignoring me, other journalists, and the UAP Scie...

RT @g_knapp: UFO research benefactor Bigelow encouraged Trump toward alien disclosure | 8 News Now https://t.co/ATBhhdvMzY

Not exactly accurate. For four months, Mark, repeatedly, said things like this... "This speech by Trump is REAL and will happen imminently." The date kept changing. On August 4th, he was still saying things like that. It was never accurate. Bigelow said that, in February, he advised Trump on what to say (a few lines), and where to say it, IF he ever decided to disclose. And Knapp disclosed (on @8NewsNow) that someone DID write some sort of a Disclosure speech for Trump - again, if he ever dec...
