Close encounters are reports in which an unidentified object or apparent phenomenon is observed at relatively short range. Astronomer J. Allen Hynek introduced the term to separate nearby cases from distant lights, radar returns, and daylight discs. The scheme was descriptive: it organized what witnesses reported without deciding whether the cause was extraterrestrial.
In Hynek’s original system, a close encounter of the first kind involved a nearby object without a reported physical effect. The second kind added effects on the environment, vehicles, animals, or witnesses, including marks, heat, or electromagnetic effects. The third kind involved an associated occupant or entity. Hynek used a distance of roughly 500 feet as a practical boundary, reasoning that close range could reduce some ordinary misidentifications while increasing the amount of detail available.
Later writers added fourth- and fifth-kind categories for abduction and deliberate human-initiated contact, but those extensions were not part of Hynek’s original three classes. Their popularity has blurred the difference between a cataloging tool and an escalating scale of certainty. A “third kind” report means that an entity was reported; it does not mean the entity was independently verified.
The classification remains useful in comparing UAP sightings because proximity and claimed effects shape what records should exist. A second-kind case may invite inspection of soil, radiation, vehicle systems, or medical effects, while an entity report depends heavily on witness documentation. Investigators still need contemporaneous notes, independent corroboration, and controls for ordinary environmental or perceptual causes. Close encounters are therefore a way to describe report content and investigative opportunities, not a finding about the phenomenon’s origin.
