Consciousness is the presence of subjective experience: being awake, having perceptions and feelings, and in some definitions being able to reflect on them. Scientific work separates level of consciousness from its contents and from metacognition. Anesthesia, sleep, brain injury, epilepsy, and disorders of consciousness provide ways to study how changes in neural systems alter awareness. Researchers also distinguish a person's report from the underlying experience, since language, memory, and attention affect what can be measured.
Neuroscience has not reached one accepted theory. Global-workspace approaches emphasize information becoming widely available across brain networks; higher-order theories focus on representations of mental states; recurrent-processing models emphasize feedback within sensory systems; integrated information theory proposes a formal relation between consciousness and causal structure. Experiments compare these ideas through neural recording, stimulation, imaging, and behavior, with substantial disagreement about what would decisively distinguish them.
UAP and contact discussions often go further, proposing that consciousness is nonlocal, fundamental to reality, or capable of mediating anomalous perception and interaction. Thinkers such as Donald Hoffman challenge everyday assumptions about perception, while Jeffrey Mishlove explores survival and psi claims. Those positions belong to philosophy, parapsychology, or speculative models unless they yield replicable predictions beyond established neural effects.
The topic matters because witnesses sometimes report altered awareness, telepathy, time distortion, or transformative aftereffects alongside anomalous events. Such reports can be psychologically important without deciding whether consciousness caused or received an external phenomenon. The established science begins with measurable relations between brain, behavior, and experience; claims of Consciousness & Psi form a narrower and more disputed branch.
