NASA-UAP-D023: Interview Excerpt with Astronaut Gordon Cooper, 1962

This released audio preserves a timecoded historical statement or debriefing passage. The source record states that gordon Cooper opines that 'a large number of exceptionally well-qualified people have seen objects' without a 'logical explanation'. The recording is useful because it preserves tone, wording, and timecoded context that a written summary alone cannot convey, while keeping the speaker's remarks distinct from verified conclusions.

  • The source states that nASA-UAP-D023, Interview Excerpt with Astronaut Gordon Cooper, 1962 transcript includes an unidentified-object reference at 0:08.159.

Why it matters

The recording is useful because it preserves tone, wording, and timecoded context that a written summary alone cannot convey, while keeping the speaker's remarks distinct from verified conclusions.

Gordo , you , uh , expressed an

00:06

interest at one time in , uh , uh ,

00:08

unidentified flying objects , the

00:10

feeling that there might be something

00:12

to all these stories . Do you still

00:14

feel that way ? Well , I , I feel that

00:18

there have been a large number of

00:21

fairly well qualified or exceptionally

00:23

well qualified , I should say , people

00:26

who have seen objects that have not .

00:29

Uh , have not had any really logical

00:31

explanation other than this . I think

00:34

that uh Maybe in fact each and every

00:37

one of them does have an explanation .

00:40

But I think that there are so many .

00:42

Possibilities , so many thousands of

00:45

possibilities of other planets out

00:47

somewhere in the universe that would

00:49

have a livable atmosphere . That I

00:52

would hate to rule out , uh , the

00:54

possibility that maybe there are people

00:57

or some type of human life on some of

01:00

these , and if this is the case , then

01:03

it's not too unfeasible to think that

01:05

perhaps some of these objects might

01:07

have been something of this type . You

01:11

don't think that the , uh ,

01:12

comparatively short step out into space

01:15

that , uh , the Mercury flight will

01:17

take you on is far enough out to Make

01:20

any observations in this area . No , I

01:24

think we're still at a fairly , uh ,

01:26

low order of , uh , of getting out into

01:29

space when you regard . When you speak

01:32

of space and being millions of miles

01:35

involved . And we're only getting 100

01:38

miles or so . What about the so-called

01:40

Glenn , Gordo , the , uh , you know ,

01:43

the snowflakes , the fireflies , uh ,

01:47

now both Shara and Carpenter , uh ,

01:49

seem to feel that it's a frost of some

01:52

nature off of the capsule , uh , but

01:54

apparently , uh , Glenn still , uh ,

01:58

sort of casts doubt on that theory .
